Office building in Amsterdam temporary living space for refugees
05 July 2024

Commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam, Monoma, together with B-Right Urban Living, transformed a vacant office building on the Bijlmerdreef into living space for 220 Ukrainian refugees. After completion, the residential complex will serve as a reception location for the next three years. Monoma is the vacancy manager of Mosaic World.

After years of vacancy and various tenants, the office building has now found a new purpose. The completion of the complex provides the municipality of Amsterdam with a solution for the temporary reception of refugees and contributes to the urban development of Amsterdam Zuidoost.

Area transformation

The building, located directly on the Bijlmerplein, is surrounded by office buildings and new-build apartments. ‘It is an area that will really get a boost in the coming years and will be transformed. Many different (construction) developments are currently taking place that are already creating a vibrant centre with a constant stream of activities,’ explains Stef Korsten, Project Manager B-Right Urban Living.

Future plans

The former office building is part of a larger redevelopment, ArenAPoort Cluster 2, in which the owners Doniger Urban Developments and B-Right Urban Living are working together on new future plans for the building. Before this building is given a definitive new purpose, it will first provide shelter to Ukrainian refugees for the next three years. We are doing this in collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam and Doniger Urban Developments,’ Korsten continues.
