Het Hendrickszhuys

At Herengracht 410–412, Doniger has given one of Amsterdam’s most remarkable historic buildings a new purpose: 28 high-quality residences with care services. The property is located on the Golden Bend, widely regarded as one of the city’s finest locations. It was built in 1664 by the renowned architect Philips Vingboons. The large rear garden contains a coach house believed to be the oldest in Amsterdam.

The historic building was used as offices for around a century, including by NV Algemene Hypotheekbank. Following years of intensive collaboration with the City of Amsterdam, Doniger converted the property into residences with care services as a pilot project, meeting a significant need in the city.

Working with Amsterdam architect André van Stigt, Doniger also upgraded this nationally listed building within the UNESCO World Heritage site to energy label A. Hendrickszhuys is the first nationally listed building within the UNESCO site to achieve this rating.

The project demonstrates how heritage conservation and a sustainable future can go hand in hand.

“At Herengracht, we demonstrate that historic character and sustainability ambitions go hand in hand. Our long-standing commitment safeguards a future in which heritage and climate awareness reinforce one another.”
