Starter residences with priority for ‘our own young people’ in Amsterdam Noord
08 August 2024

Doniger Urban Developments wants to build more than four hundred starter residences on Hilversumstraat in Amsterdam Noord. More than a quarter of the De Zuidkaap complex is intended for young adults and starters from the immediate vicinity and the rest of Amsterdam Noord. Agreements were made about this with the municipality of Amsterdam last month.

Astrid van den Berg, director of development at Doniger: “We see a major social challenge to help starters in particular with affordable housing. De Zuidkaap can make a significant contribution to this.” People with a crucial profession (care, education, police, GVB) may also be given priority.

On the partly unused parking lot next to the De Noordkaap building on Hilversumstraat 316 – also owned by Doniger and rented to the Salvation Army – there is room for new construction with studios and apartments, of which 240 in the social rental sector and 212 in the mid-priced rental sector. The design provides for shared facilities, such as a lounge, roof garden, coffee corner and launderette. On the ground floor there is space for catering and a social neighbourhood initiative.

In the coming period, Doniger will involve neighbours and interested parties in a participation process. MVSA architects designed the main lines of the building. This will be further elaborated in the coming months, during which input from a participation process with the neighbourhood will also be processed. For example, this concerns the question of which (neighbourhood) facilities are needed. The first meetings will take place after the summer holidays.
